Benbrook is a city of about 24,500 people (2020 Census) on the southwest side of Tarrant County, right next to Fort Worth. It is known for Benbrook Lake, easy highway access and a quieter pace than the city, while still putting downtown Fort Worth, TCU and the area’s biggest employers within a short drive. Here is what renters usually want to know.
Getting around
Benbrook sits where I-20, Loop 820 and US 377 (Benbrook Boulevard) meet, so most of the Fort Worth area is an easy drive. From Benbrook Apartments on Williams Road, approximate drive times in light traffic are:
- About 10 minutes to Lockheed Martin and NAS Fort Worth Joint Reserve Base
- About 10 minutes to The Shops at Clearfork
- About 10 to 15 minutes to Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Southwest Fort Worth
- About 15 minutes to TCU and to downtown Fort Worth
Everyday shopping and dining line Benbrook Boulevard, and the larger retail centers of southwest Fort Worth are a few minutes up the road.
Benbrook Lake
The lake was formed in 1952 when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built Benbrook Dam, and the Corps still runs most of the parks around it. A few favorites:
- North Holiday Day Use Area: a designated swimming beach and boat ramps.
- Mustang Point: a swim beach (April through September), boat ramps and picnic areas.
- South Holiday Campground: campsites, a fishing pier and access to more than 14 miles of hiking and equestrian trails.
- Longhorn Park: a picnic area and boat ramp, with free access to the overlook and ramp.
- Rocky Creek Park and Bear Creek Campground: more camping, picnicking and lake access.
Most Corps parks charge an entry or camping fee paid by card at the park. Some ramps and areas close when the lake is low, so check current conditions with the Corps before you go.
Trails
The 1.5-mile crest of Benbrook Dam is popular with walkers, joggers and cyclists, and the Holiday Park Nature Trail is about 1.7 miles round trip. Just below the dam, Pecan Valley Park in Fort Worth is the southwestern end of the Trinity Trails, the paved river trail system that runs northeast toward downtown.
Library and schools
The Benbrook Public Library is at 1065 Mercedes Street. Benbrook’s public schools are part of Fort Worth ISD; school assignments depend on the exact address, so confirm them with the district.
